Things to do in Winchester this Christmas

As one of Winchester’s most famous pubs and hotels we are often asked for recommendations on what to do in Winchester. As such we thought we would create a guide to the top things to do in Winchester at Christmas.

Christmas Market

We’ll get this one out of the way early! An institution in Winchester since 2006, the Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market is one of the most famous Christmas markets in Europe. With over 100 stalls to meander round, the market has an emphasis on supporting local craftspeople & independent traders. Running between 17th November & 20th December, there is plenty of time to visit, but to avoid the crowds we recommend visiting the market on a week day.

Afternoon Tea at the Saint George Tea Room

If you are visiting for the market or perhaps desperately trying to avoid it, you’ll want somewhere to rest your feet and indulge in a little festive treat. The Saint George Tea Room, conveniently located across the street from The Wykeham Arms, is home to the best afternoon tea in Winchester.

During the markets you’ll be able to enjoy one of their famous afternoon teas, accompanied with the traditional cup of tea, or perhaps a Christmassy mulled wine to awaken those yuletide taste buds.

Farmers’ Market

For an alternative market, why not visit the Winchester Farmers’ Market, which is held on the second and final Sunday of each month. One of the UK’s largest farmers’ market, you can enjoy food & drink from over 80 local producers and enjoy some of the amazing produce, freshly prepared at one of the many food stalls.

Winchester Cathedral

It is there all year round, but Winchester Cathedral is particularly magical at Christmas. Built in the 11th century, it is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe and is at the heart of Winchester. At Christmas time you’ll find an Ice Rink as well as a host of carol services and concerts to awaken the Christmas spirit.

Carol concert at the Wykeham Arms

If a carol service in a church isn’t your thing, how about one in a pub! Every year at the iconic Wykeham Arms pub in Winchester we welcome the phenomenal Winchester Cathedral Choir into our pub to perform carols and entertain the lucky customers who can get their hands on tickets.
You can contact us via phone or email to book tickets, or alternatively why not book the ultimate Winchester Christmas experience – you can find out more about the package here.

The Wykeham Arms also makes the perfect place to stay during the festive season. All of our bedrooms underwent an extensive refurbishment earlier this year and with the pub downstairs you’re never far from a nightcap.
